A parents worse nightmare…head lice! How does it spread and how-to prevent.
Good morning beauties! Some of our kids will be starting school this week, and I know this is an embarrassing subject to discuss, but it is one of the most important, head lice. Many of us have had the scare of an outbreak of head lice at our children’s daycare or school. How many were thanking the hair gods that it wasn’t your child that had it? Now, I don’t want to freak anyone out, but I thought I’d share some quick information about these little buggers.
How do they spread?
In the past, we were told that lice would jump from person to person. Now, we know that they crawl! They can live up to 36 hours off the human head and on clothing and other materials such as helmets, combs, headphones, etc.
How to prevent lice?
It is essential to never share combs, ponytails, hats, scarves, coats, blankets, and pillows. When taking your kid to daycare or preschool, make sure that they have their own cubby’s. If you want to take it a step further bring a large plastic bag for your children’s things to go in. If your child is in grade school, remind them that personal items are not to be shared. Another step to take in lice prevention is to perform a daily head check. It is a simple process where you look through the hair. I like to do this during bathtime. There are hot spots where the lice want to live. They are behind the ears, along the part line, and at the base of the neck.
